Chato
(1860-1934)

In 1881, Chato fled the San Carlos Reservation with Geronimo and hid out with his renegade band in northern Mexico. He and his warriors made several raids in Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico before surrendering to General Crook in 1884. When Geronimo escaped from San Carlos the next year, Chato served as a scout for General Crook's Anglo-U.S. troops. Despite his army service and a plea to authorities in Washington, D.C., Chato was exiled with Gernoimo to Fort Sill in Oklahoma. In 1913 he was allowed to return to the Mescalero Apache Reservation in New Mexico.
