The account of W.S. Oury in the Tucson Star:

"From January 1, 1871, to April 30, of the same year, the day on which the so-called Camp Grant massacre took place, every page of the history of southern Arizona is written in the blood of her people. The month of February is so replete with robbery and murder that to particularize would be an endless undertaking."

"During all these dark days the people of Tucson, who better than anyone else knew the habits and characteristics of the Apaches, had charged time and again that the depredations and murders were committed by the Indians of the Camp Grant reservation. These charges were denied by Whitman, and the people of Tucson were thus compelled in their desperation to take matters in their own hands."
